EU Truck Registrations Climb 7.5% Through the First Nine Months of 2026, With Poland Growing Fastest Among Major Markets

The European Union registered 245,079 new trucks in the first nine months of 2026, a 7.5-percent gain that the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association describes as a recovery from a low base — with heavy trucks up 8.5%, Poland up 20.5% and Spain up 13.2%, while electrically-chargeable trucks grew 49.8% yet still hold just 5.3% of a market where diesel accounts for 91.7% of sales. The upgrade — concrete paving, upgraded water and sewage, driver sanitary facilities, an electronic weighbridge, lighting, backup power, access barriers and video surveillance — was announced by the Customs Service on 17 October 2026. It arrives in the middle of an autumn in which, according to the grain exporters' association Agrocereale, between 150 and 300 lorries have been queueing outside the same crossing every day.

From 8 October 2026, a goods vehicle powered solely by electricity pays a quarter of Romania's per-kilometre road toll. Order no. 959/2026, published in Monitorul Oficial no. 847 and in force the day it appeared, adds a dedicated electric column to the TollRo tariff table — the charge that goods vehicles above 3.5 tonnes have paid per kilometre on Romanian motorways, expressways and national roads since 1 October 2026 — cutting the rate for a 12-tonne-plus electric truck from 0.48 to 0.12 lei per motorway kilometre, while Euro V-IV diesels carry a 15 per cent and Euro III-or-older diesels a 30 per cent surcharge over Euro VI.
